Our grandparents knew how to get things out of the yard and have a side dish for dinner.
From crabgrass to orchid flowers learn some basic yard plants that you can eat!
But remember don’t spray them with pesticides or miracle grow or you may make yourself sick! So what are some common weeds in my yard that I can eat and use?
Well let’s start off!
Yes the first one is that pesky crabgrass! Crabgrass is also known as digitaria sanaguinalis. Seeds are what are mainly used from this plant. The plant is native to Europe. The US government brought it in to plant as a food source. However since it matures at different levels it is difficult to harvest in mass quantities. Crabgrass has been used in Poland, Germany and Africa as a grain to make mullet. Mullet is made from seeds that are toasted and ground up to make a flour, one plant produces 150,000 seeds. Now that’s impressive! Currently they are using crabgrass as a staple plant in Africa! You can actually buy a bag of crabgrass flour off of Amazon called Fonio. For around $8.Crabgrass spread so fast. You can eat the very young just forming leaves as they are soft without prickles. But as they get older you don’t want to eat the older leaves. They are tough and not enjoyable. Wait until the stock matures and is ready to form seeds then you can harvest the seeds. Then you will dry the seeds and you can crush them to make flour! Here is a basic crabgrass recipe you can try!
Crabgrass Porridge
1 cup of toasted crabgrass seeds put in a food processor and blended
Two cups of clean water
One apple cut into small pieces
1 tsp of cinnamon
3 tbsp of sweetener, I like to use xylitol
Stir together on the stove and medium heat bring to a boil and reduce heat. Add another cup of water once the water has cooked down.
This makes a beautiful crab grass porridge

Porter weed or snake grass is also know as straxhytarpheta Jamai census. Leaves and flowers of the Porter weed are edible. They are used in salads, boiled and made into a tincture with the leaves, and the flowers and stems are eaten raw. Porter weed has many medical uses boiling it and making it into a tea or tincture may help with many medical issues. The medical uses help with digestion problems including constipation, ulcers and acid reflux. It has helped with respiratory infections associated with colds and flu. It helps aid an infections and reducing fever. Also it can aid in lowering blood pressure. You eat the flour stem and flowers which taste like mushrooms fresh and can be put into salads. The leaves can be boiled to make a tincture, tea and fermented to make a beer. That is where the name Porter comes from in the porter weed is making the beer. You can also use the leaves like Bay leaves. To add flavor to stews. Bees and butterflies love this plant as it is also considered a butterfly plant.
A recipe to try would be:
Porter Leaf and Rose Tea
2 tablespoons dried Porter leaves,
2 tablespoons dried rose petals
1 tablespoon sweetener honey or xylitol.
Boil and make a tea to enjoy
Dry Maria also known as carophyllaceac thisis an amazing weed. You can eat the young leaves and shoots raw or sauteed as a vegetable. You can just pick the leaves and put them in your salad they are from a tropical climate including northeastern Mexico, Asia and Africa. They have medical applications. It can aid and reducing fever, inflammation, diabetes and overall health.
An easy recipe to try:
Sauted Drymaria with Dandelion
1/2 cup dandelion leaves
1/2 cup dry Maria
1/2 cup spinach
1/4 cup scallions
Saute in Moroccan olive oil, Himalayansalt and pepper, and lemon. Serve when wilted. Enjoy
Shoreline Sea Purslan is also known as Sesuvium Portulacastrum . You can eat these beautiful plants found pretty much anywhere. You can eat them raw, pickled, sauteed,. Scientists have reported it has 10 to 20 times more melatonin than any other fruit or vegetable. They are high in vitamin c, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus they are also high in omega-3s and oxalates. So if you’re prone to kidney stones you should limit to no more than 23 grams per day. The Sealine Purslan is found close to the ocean. They are even in Hawaii,. The Sealine Purslan are saltier and larger than the Common Purslan. Some say the Sealine purslan tastes like pickles or black olives. So yes there is another kind of Purslan. The Common porcelain has more of a lemon flavor. The Common Purslan is smaller than the Sealine! But be careful when forging there is a copycat Purslan but it’s easy to spot! When you break the leaf open the leaf has a milky substance. Don’t eat this one. The one you want has no milky substance coming out! Grow your own purslan in pots. You can even buy some at a Mexican or Chinese market!

Purslan, Avocado and Cucumber salad
3 ounce Purslan
1/2 avocado
2 ounce cilantro
Baby tomatos
Carrots sliced
Scallions
1 apple
Grapes
Mix sliced veggies together and mix with Moroccan olive oil, juice of 1 lemon or lime, salt and pepper to taste
Common Clover also known as Trifolium Repens came over from Europe in the 1600s. Clover is found all over the world. The leaves can be cooked or eaten raw. It can be made into clover jelly! And is safe to eat out of your yard! All parts of the the clover are safe. Did you know the three parts of the clover represents the Trinity. One leaf the Father, one leaf the Son, and one leaf the Holy Spirit three in one.
Why not try this:
CloverJelly
2 cups of fresh clover flowers
2 cups boiling water
One package liquid pectin or one package of powdered pectin
4 cups sugar or sugar substitute my favorite is xylitol
Bring water to boil. Put clover into mason jars, pour hot water over the clover let set for 4 hours. Strain over a saucepan. Add your sweetener and then your pectin to the clover water, mix well and bring to boil lower temperature and simmer for 5 minutes. Pour in your jelly jars and tighten the lids, put in a water bath for 10 minutes remove from water bath and set aside to rest for 3 to 4 hours. And enjoy your Clover Jelly
Dandelion also known as Taraxacum was thought to be brought over on the Mayflower back in the 1600s. Valued for its medical and culinary purposes. Bees and insects love dandelion flowers. Dandelion can be eaten fresh or dried! It is a wonderful herb and very healthy for your liver and overall cleansing! You can eat dandelions as a salad, saute with garlic and olive oil.Try juicing dandelion with celery, and you can also use dandelion root as a substitute for coffee. Dandelion crowns can be sauteed in olive oil and spices and are crunchy. Of course you can make dandelion tea! Try this recipe out!
Dandelion pesto
Gathered young dandelion leaves bright green that are 4 in length without flowers.
2 cups dandelion leaves
1/4 cup pine nuts, sunflower seeds or cashews
2-3 minced garlic cloves
1/2 parmesan cheese
1/2 Moroccan olive oil
1/2 juiced lemon or one tablespoon of lemon juice
1/4 to 1/2 tbsp kosher salt
Optional add a few bay leaves to add a more traditional pesto flavor
Blend all leaves in a food processor, then add all the other ingredients in the food processor blend until smooth and creamy enjoy with your favorite chips(I love sweet potato chips) or crackers. Garnish with the flowers on top
Sticky chickweed
Sticky chickweed came from Europe it tastes like corn on the cob that looks like spinach! You can eat the entire plant but not the roots! Sticky chickweed is very medicinal! It aids in digestive problems, blood disorders, asthma, and obesity. It is high in vitamin c, and helps in skin problems like itching, muscle and joint pain. You can make a pulpus for skin problems like psoriasis, boils, abscesses and ulcers. This is very healing!
Try this recipe
Sticky chickweed Salve
Get two cups sticky chickweed the whole plant except the roots. Put in a saucepan and cook for 90 minutes covered in olive oil on low. Carefully strain the herbs out after 90 minutes and squeeze all the oil out of the herbs into the pan. Add beeswax and poor into old cream jars or small tins from Amazon. Great for insect bites, rashes, cuts, and burns
