The history of chemicals in cosmetics
So I started to dig in to clean makeup versus a dirty makeup and there was so much back and forth.
What is dirty?
What is clean?
What chemicals are good?
Which ones are bad?
We’ve been made to think a certain way!
I’m gonna give you the facts of what I’ve learned and then I’m going to go through my top three of different types of makeups so that you can have a starting point of how to have cleaner makeup more holistic.
Can you make your own makeup? You can and that’s for another time.
For a cleaner makeup the goal is to keep the toxins to a low amount and in order for you to do that I wanna give you a little history lesson.
Well what is dirty chemicals in cosmetics well they used to use lead in makeup in the Elizabethan time they would wear completely white makeup as a sign of importance but they used this lead based cream to make their whole face white.
Makeup was worn to change the look of our face. There were recipe books for makeup before companies were making makeup for hair removal and skin care and hair dye and the ingredients in these recipe books were so dangerous that it was causing the women all kinds of damage to their bodies and some died. The chemicals that they were supposed to use for these recipes were so dangerous.
Avon in the midcentury became popular but it had a carcinogen known as asbestos. The makeup industry did not realize that their products were unsafe until reports of the makeup leaving sores on the men they were kissing. The women didn’t want unsafe makeup products.
Cover girl wanted to come in and make better products the only problem was they didn’t make better products they just advertised that they did. Cover Girl said that their products were clean and natural. They would have advertisements that would have oceans and water and anything that symbolizes clean and natural for their products, but it was full of synthetics.
But in 1970 hippies declared no commercial companies and so they began to make their own products out of natural ingredients and soon companies started to make nature mimicking ingredient cosmetics using synthetics to match natural colors like blueberry or cherry.
After this cover girl decided to have a natural makeup look. Which is kind of the makeup we go for today, the no makeup makeup.
Now to go into brainwashing labels like organic, natural, non-toxic, cruelty free, these are all not defined by the FDA so they promise, nothing.
A study in 2008 was conducted by David Steinman and the Organic Consumers Association they conducted laboratory analysis of 99 personal care products and found that 45 contained detectable levels of the carcinogen 1.4 dioxin it’s not on labels due to accidentally being a byproduct during manufacturing.
Also fragrance-free is a botched term 2 FDA allows fragrances to be put in to mask the foul sense without adding it to the label.
Hypoallergenic, allergy testing, and safe for sensitive skin, that means nothing.
There’s no requirement to do any additional testing.
Containment-free is the newest labeling craze, like free from phthalate and PFA, or paraben-free.
These labels have been added to cosmetic products but by doing this they’ve even added more dangerous chemicals such as methylisothiazolinone This ingredient is known to cause an allergic reaction.
They just use the paraben-free label to hide the other chemicals that nobody’s talking about. Ohh this makes me so frustrated.
All I wanna do is have makeup and other care products that are safe for me and my kids we trust these companies but they’re all just fighting for one thing or another long shelf-life cheap ingredients in marketing so I’ll buy it.
Top brands I found with a little backstory
Honest Company: The Honest Company is owned by Jessica Alba, she started it because when she had her daughter she washed her baby clothes in a well-known baby laundry soap and her sweet baby broke out in a rash.
She then became determined to find a better solution. Her baby didn’t really have sensitive skin and she could only imagine how bad it would be for kids who did.
Thus, The Honest Company was born but with the name like honest company, there were a lot of critics who wanted them to be honest and everything they do so there were some lawsuits against The Honest Company saying that the sunscreen didn’t work and that some of the wipes had mold in it.
Jessica Alba did address these issues and fixed them and rebranded their focus on diapers baby products baby laundry soap and makeup.
Physicians Formula: The company was founded in 1937 it was invented by a real physician, an allergist whose wife had terribly sensitive skin and was unable to wear cosmetics that were available in the 1930s so he decided to develop a line of makeup just for her.
He sold his line of makeup to his patients he truly believed that what goes on your body goes in your body.
Compared to the other makeup lines that were available during that time his products were free from the 132 ingredients that were dangerous in cosmetics including talc which has asbestos in it a known carcinogen.
He also introduced SPF into his products he felt like this would help with skin damage from the sun.
He also invented bronzer thinking that this would help his patients be out in the sun less often to have less skin damage.
After he died in 1953, his company was sold.
In 2012 Markwins International bought physicians’ formula, they also own Wet and Wild and other cosmetic companies, and they were eager to expand the physician’s formula line.
Physicians Formula was the first company to come out with a 100% organic line of makeup using 100% organic material.
They were also the 1st to come out with biodegradable packaging their bamboo line is all biodegradable packaging.
Still to this day, they hold to their standard. Their scientists use a list of over 500 harmful and questionable ingredients and avoid them.

Conclusion
I wanna start by saying there are some good companies out there that want to do the right thing.
On that same note there are companies that are greenwashing ingredient lead misleading saying ohh this has vitamin B and vitamin A and not telling you oh it also has these nasty chemicals.
Biden did pass a new bill called the Consolidated Appreciations Act to modernize of Cosmetics Regulation Act. This bill is supposed to make it so that there are more regulations on cosmetics and actual testing done. But they hold up to the standard of what their labels say.
I did find a really cool website where you can copy and paste in the ingredients list and it’ll tell you what every ingredient is for and what it does you could also take a picture of it and it will have a list of what the ingredients are and what they do. Ingredient Decoder
I really do hope that this helped you understand a little bit about makeup and how to have a more natural makeup that doesn’t harm you
