Honey can you go outside and get dinner?

What on earth?

Our grandparents knew how to get things out of the yard and have a side dish for dinner.

From crabgrass to orchid flowers learn some basic yard plants that you can eat!

But remember don’t spray them with pesticides or miracle grow or you may make yourself sick! So what are some common weeds in my yard that I can eat and use?
Well let’s start off!

Yes the first one is that pesky crabgrass! Crabgrass is also known as digitaria sanaguinalis. Seeds are what are mainly used from this plant. The plant is native to Europe. The US government brought it in to plant as a food source. However since it matures at different levels it is difficult to harvest in mass quantities. Crabgrass has been used in Poland, Germany and Africa as a grain to make mullet. Mullet is made from seeds that are toasted and ground up to make a flour, one plant produces 150,000 seeds. Now that’s impressive! Currently they are using crabgrass as a staple plant in Africa! You can actually buy a bag of crabgrass flour off of Amazon called Fonio. For around $8.Crabgrass spread so fast. You can eat the very young just forming leaves as they are soft without prickles. But as they get older you don’t want to eat the older leaves. They are tough and not enjoyable. Wait until the stock matures and is ready to form seeds then you can harvest the seeds. Then you will dry the seeds and you can crush them to make flour! Here is a basic crabgrass recipe you can try!

Crabgrass Porridge
1 cup of toasted crabgrass seeds put in a food processor and blended

1 tsp of cinnamon
3 tbsp of sweetener, I like to use xylitol
